Make a Difference: Volunteer at Anixter Center

Anixter Center is one of the largest nonprofit organizations in the Chicago area serving people of all ages with disabilities. Each year, we help more than 8,000 children, teens, adults and older adults with disabilities through more than 30 programs and locations that span the greater Chicago area. It is our volunteers who make it possible for us to help so many people every year. Without their dedication, enthusiasm and compassion, Anixter Center simply could not help as many children, teens and adults as we do. Our volunteers represent all ages and come from all cultures and backgrounds. Some volunteer for a specific project; others give several hours a week or a month. No matter what they do or how much time they donate, all help to make the lives of people with disabilities better.

Making a Real Difference

There are many ways to make a difference in the lives of children, teens and adults with disabilities.

Some Volunteer Opportunities Include:

  • Tutor
  • Lead mock interviews
  • Help with special events
  • Paint/complete beautification projects
  • Garden
  • Musicians
  • Storytellers
  • Provide office support
  • Assemble adaptive toys
  • Wrap holiday presents
  • Clean and organize program spaces
  • Serve as group or teacher assistants

Becoming a volunteer at Anixter Center will allow you to use your talents to make a positive impact on someone else's life... and your own!

Achieving Goals

At this point in her life, Paula is focused on two important goals–first, getting her GED and then getting a good job. She knows that not having a high school diploma is holding her back. So twice a week she meets with Lloyd, her volunteer literacy tutor at Anixter Center. Together they are tackling all subjects–English to Science–and taking lots of practice tests. Each test Paula passes takes her one step closer to achieving her goals.

Giving Back

After retiring from the business world, Lloyd was looking for a new challenge. He began tutoring at Anixter Center because he lived nearby and liked the idea of giving back. What he didn’t expect when he first started was that he would get so much more than he gives. Even though Lloyd has since moved farther away, he keeps coming twice a week to help Paula get her GED. It has become a goal they both share.
