Anixter Center Success | Margaret

Margaret definitely knows what she wants—a job. And she also knows what it will take to get one—better job skills and her GED. Anixter Center is supporting her all the way.

To say Margaret is motivated is an understatement. She has been part of Anixter Center’s Day Mental Health program for less than a year, but she already sees where it has made a major impact in her life. “I’m learning and I’m growing every day,” she said confidently.

To build her job skills, Margaret started working three days a week in Anixter Center’s Canteen, preparing, serving and selling food to clients and staff. She also began meeting with a tutor from Anixter Center’s free adult Literacy program so she could prepare to take the GED exam (a high school equivalency test).

If all of that wasn’t keeping Margaret busy enough, she heard about yet another job opportunity and seized on it. Chicago Hearing Society (CHS) needed people to manage their receptionist desk in the middle of the day so that CHS staff could take their lunches.

Margaret took the initiative to ask for the job and she was one of three people hired. One day a week, she greets CHS patients and alerts staff when patients arrive.

“I love meeting people as they come for their appointments and having brief conversations with them,” she said. “As a receptionist, I feel wanted and I know the people appreciate me.”

It’s a win-win for both Margaret and CHS. “We’re really happy to be a stepping-stone so that people can expand their skills and find jobs in the community,” said Karen Aguilar, CHS Director.

While Margaret loves working so that she can improve her job skills, she also loves getting her own paycheck. “It is really great to be making my own money,” she said with a smile.
